sb3 (2015)
clarinet, violin, and piano
Program Notes
Pronounced "s.b. cubed," this composition is a reinvention of Star Bits - a piece that I composed for solo alto saxophone in 2011. In writing sb3, I imagined what it would be like to experience Star Bits in '3D'. I've portrayed this interpretation through choice of instrumentation, expansion of register, addition of harmony, and inclusion of canons and inversions. The original Star Bits makes use of many extended saxophone techniques; with sb3, I've preserved the essence of these e-ects and enhanced them by drawing on the individual and collective timbral capabilities of the clarinet, violin, and piano.
